To hold the concrete in place until it acquires the necessary strength and shape, formwork is a horizontal or vertical arrangement to support any concrete structure. Shuttering which is the part of formwork is called vertical formwork.

Shuttering is a support in the form of fresh concrete. At first, a mould is made in which concrete is poured. This mould is used to strengthen the initial structure and harden it. In shapes and sizes of formwork are available for different purposes like building, pipelines, and dams. It costs almost 20-25% of the total cost of construction. It can be built and removed as per need. The process of removing the shuttering is called stripping.

What is Precast Shuttering Formwork?

Precast concrete structures such as slabs, beams, columns, and other sections are generally used as permanent formwork, often in composite construction. Generally, the surface of the precast concrete structure will be prepared rough, so that new concrete bonds properly to it. Depending on the expected loading, the precast parts may be supplied with some projecting reinforcement that will be cast into the site.

Different Types of Forms:

  • Steel Formwork: In this type of formwork, steel plates are used, which are hardened by the edges.

Advantages:

  1. Very strong and durable.
  2. Easy to fix.
  3. Easy to fit on any surface.

Disadvantages:

  1. Much more expensive
  2. Heavy, not easy to handle.
  3. Shape & size is limited.
  4. Timber Formwork: The timber must be light in weight without loose knots, well seasoned, and easy to handle.

Advantages:

  1. Lightweight- easy to handle.
  2. Can be cut and dismantled very easily.
  3. Thermal resistant.

Disadvantages:

  1. It is not long-lasting.
  2. Absorbs moisture which weakens its strength.
  3. Aluminum Formwork: It is made from high-quality aluminum alloy for constructing apartments, and buildings.

Advantages:

  1. Cost-effective and reusable.
  2. It can be removed very easily.
  3. Lightweight and easy to carry.

Disadvantages:

  1. It is not firm enough to hold any heavy weights.
  2. Expensive.
  3. Not suitable for structural modifications.
